What is the role: Book Group Leader
Who is the role for: TeaBooks (part of Bookfeast charity). These are book groups for the over-60s.
When does the volunteering take place: For one hour, once a month, at a time to suit the group and the volunteer, usually in the daytime on a weekday.
Where does the volunteering take place: Volunteers currently needed for new groups we are setting up in YARNTON, CUTTESLOWE, HENLEY and BANBURY, However, if you are interested in the project, but not in these locations, do get in touch as we may be able to start a group in your area.
What the role involves: Leading the conversation about whatever book the group has chosen to read that month, making everyone feel welcome and included, and understanding that the book is usually only the starting point for a sociable, stimulating hour of chat (and hopefully laughter!). Between sessions, the volunteer needs to order books from the library and will need to feedback attendance figures to project co-ordinator four times a year.
Why you should sign up: Being a TeaBooks volunteer is a great way to genuinely improve the quality of life for many older people, not only introducing them to new books and authors, but also to new people and ideas. The time commitment is relatively small and can be organised around your existing commitments. You would be joining a team of around 18 lovely volunteers, most of whom have been with us since the project started five years ago and there’s ongoing support from the project co-ordinator.
Skills required: A love of reading and chatting! Due to the responsibility for leading a group we will take references for this role. Travel expenses are covered.
