What is the role: Befriending
Who is the role for: Tandem Befriending – a mental health befriending charity for Oxford City residents
When does the volunteering take place: Weekly – the dates and times of meetings are mutually agreed
Where does the volunteering take place: In a public place away from the befriendee’s home
What does the role involve: To provide a 1:1 Befriending partnership to someone over the age of 18 who has/had mental health problems, by meeting with them weekly for an hour in the community
Why you should sign up to this role: If you are interested in helping someone who has/had mental health problems improve their quality of life and if you can spare an hour a week, this may be an ideal volunteering opportunity for you. We provide individualised training and a careful matching process to enable a mutually rewarding volunteering experience as a Befriender. You could also come along to one of our weekly Wednesday afternoon Social Group activity as a taster session and also have a chat with the Co-Ordinator. Individual (as required) and Group Supervision where you will meet other Befrienders (every 3 months), are also provided.
Skills required for this role: People skills, Listening skills, Empowering skills, Reliability, Ability to work at the other person’s pace, Self-management skills and ability to use Supervision.

Please note that due to the nature of this role references and a DBS check are required. Travel expenses are paid. You will be provided with training needed for your role. Tandem Befriending hope that you will be able to commit to a year of volunteering for one hour a week.
