What is the role: Team Manager or Support Worker
Who is the role for: Bridges Drop-in
When does the volunteering take place: Wednesday’s 11:45 – 2:30pm and Friday’s 9:45 – 2:30pm
Where does the volunteering take place: The Salvation Army, Hart Place, Bicester, OX26 4FR
What does the role involve: Our drop-in is for people experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless and for those struggling with alcohol or drug dependence.
The role would initially involve welcoming clients, chatting to them and helping them to feel at home. Setting up the room beforehand, packing down afterwards. Helping in the kitchen as we provide hot meals.
If you wish your role could extend to helping clients access online services such as email, online forms or the housing register. Or taking a role as a support worker, assessing clients and forming an action plan to help resolve their difficulties.
Why you should sign up to this role: The role would really suit someone who wants to give something back, and to befriend and help people who are in a difficult situation. It would provide a good introduction for someone who wants to work in related fields, such as social work, mental health or drug and alcohol services. Volunteers will be properly supervised and there is lots of training available.
Maybe you have experienced some difficult times yourself and want to help someone else to pull through. The benefit system is difficult to negotiate and housing so difficult to find – people often need a friend to give them a hand. Maybe that could be you?
Skills required for this role:
- Friendly disposition towards our clients.
- Ability to work in a team (to take instruction, muck in and disagree nicely etc)
- Because of the nature of our clients this wouldn’t suit someone who is physically frail or has mobility difficulties.
- Experience in key-working, advice services or related fields would be beneficial.
