What is the role: Listening volunteer
Who for: Oxford Samaritans
When: Samaritans runs 24 hours a day, so you can volunteer each week at a time to suit you
Where: 60 Magdalen Road, Oxford (opposite the Pegasus Theatre)
What is involved: Listening to and supporting people in distress, some of whom may be expressing suicidal thoughts and feelings.
Why you should sign up: This is life-changing volunteering which is worthwhile, challenging and fulfilling. Supporting another human being in a time of great need, when other are not available, is a reward in itself.
Skills required: You need to be caring, empathetic and a good listener. Samaritans volunteers must be non-judgemental and open-minded. Our listening training for volunteers is thorough and highly regarded everywhere. Volunteers are asked to be able to commit to the role for 18 months.
Support available: You will receive an induction and training for your role so that you know what to expect. The listening training is highly regarded and well known. Travel expenses can be claimed.
Due to the nature of this role you will need to have a DBS check and references.
